- In the game between Francois – Andre Danican Philidor explained the principles, which make up the basis of positional game. Philidor’s bookwas published in 1749 and his quote, “Pawns are the soul of chess” the pawn structure defined the character of the game.

- Emanuel Lasker became World Champion in 1894 and held it for an amazing 27 years. Lasker underlined the importance of coordinating the pieces and endings.
